Stress Relief and Self Care:Could Thrifting Be Your Next Stress Relief Strategy?

Stress Relief and Self Care:Could Thrifting Be Your Next Stress Relief Strategy?

Let’s continue on with our series on stress relief and self-care. Today we’re exploring something a little different. Thrifting. And I have to be honest with you, I tried it myself before writing this post.

What the Research Says

Before I share my own experience, let me tell you what the experts have found. Research published through the Iowa State Digital Press highlights secondhand shopping as a genuine coping mechanism for anxiety. And when you dig into the “why,” it actually makes a lot of sense.

Thrifting triggers what researchers call the “treasure hunt” effect. The unpredictability of not knowing what you’ll find activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, the feel-good chemical that gives your mood a natural boost. On top of that, buying secondhand removes the financial guilt that often follows traditional retail therapy. Same reward, a fraction of the cost, and none of the stress that comes with overspending.

There’s also a mindfulness element. Thrifting naturally slows you down. You browse, you touch things, you consider. That slower, more deliberate kind of shopping can actually pull your mind away from the anxious loops that stress creates.

My Honest Take

I visited a Goodwill store and had a mixed experience. The clothing section was a little frustrating for me. Everything is organized by color rather than size, so if you spotted a design you loved, there was a good chance it wasn’t available in your size. For me personally, that actually added a bit of stress rather than relieving it.

But here’s where it got fun. The book section. I found two hardback books for just $1.50 each. And that little discovery? That was the moment. That was the dopamine hit the researchers talk about. Simple, affordable, and I walked away genuinely happy with my finds.

This experience reminded me of something I truly believe about stress relief in general. Not every method is right for every person. And that’s okay. The goal is to find what works for YOU.

There’s More Than One Way to Thrift

Here’s what I’ve come to appreciate: thrifting isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is the experience.

Goodwill and Salvation Army are great for browsing and budget finds, but they can feel a little overwhelming if you go in looking for something specific.

Consignment stores tend to be more curated and organized. The items are often sorted by size and style, which makes the experience feel a lot more relaxed and enjoyable. If traditional thrift stores haven’t clicked for you, a consignment shop might be worth a try.

Poshmark is honestly one of my favorite ways to “thrift.” It’s secondhand shopping with the convenience of online searching. You can look up specific items, filter by size, brand, and price, and find exactly what you’re looking for at a bargain. In my mind, that’s thrifting. Used items at a lower price, and you get to shop in your pajamas. Win-win.

Community thrifting sites are another wonderful option. My daughter uses one to shop for her two little girls, and the things she has found are absolutely beautiful. Gently loved children’s clothing at a fraction of the retail price. It’s smart, it’s sustainable, and there’s something really heartwarming about items being passed along and loved again.

A Thought on Stress Relief

I see most stress relief techniques as healthy distractions. And in that distraction, there’s a window for your mindset to shift. Thrifting gives your mind something fun, affordable, and purposeful to focus on. The stress doesn’t disappear, but for a little while, something better takes its place.

Whether it’s a $1.50 hardback book, a gently worn blouse in exactly your size on Poshmark, or a beautiful little dress found for your granddaughter on a community site, there’s something undeniably hopeful about finding treasure in unexpected places.

Maybe that’s the real gift of thrifting.

Want to Give It a Try?

Here are a few easy ways to get started:

  • Visit a local consignment store for a more relaxed, curated experience
  • Browse Poshmark (www.poshmark.com) and search by size, brand, or item
  • Check Facebook Marketplace or local community groups for secondhand gems
  • Head to Goodwill or Salvation Army with an open mind and no strict list
  • Set a small budget ($10-$20) and see what treasures you discover

There’s no wrong way to do it. Find the version that feels right for you, and enjoy the hunt.

Remember, self care isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. Take care of you.
