Tell Your Story Through Journal Prompts

Life often pulls families apart and keeps people from truly knowing our story. Journaling offers a vibrant, uplifting way to share who you really are—your experiences, your dreams, your voice. This series is all about inspiring you to tell your story with confidence, so that your story is prepared for whenever someone is ready to listen.

Journal Prompt
What is one of the scariest things you have ever done?

When I reflect on one of the most frightening things I’ve ever done, one experience stands out right away: parasailing in the Caribbean.

I recall signing up for the adventure, with options to fly for a set time or extend the trip for an extra fee. Since I’d never gone parasailing before, I decided to take the plunge and pay for the longer ride.

This event happened decades ago, and I can remember my husband, at the time, being terrified at the thought of this activity because he was afraid of heights. I, on the other hand, was raring to go.

I remember standing on the platform, ready to gear up for the ride. The guides were speaking in their native language, and I had no idea what they were saying. As they strapped me into the harness, I anxiously waited for instructions. Finally, I asked, “What do I do?” One guide’s reply came quickly: “Hold on, lady!” Without warning, I was yanked off the platform. I soared through the air before plunging into the water, without a chance to take a breath. It all happened so fast that before I could fully register it, I was gasping for air and suddenly lifted higher and higher into the sky.

I survived my initiation into the world of parasailing. What made the ride so terrifying was that the only instruction I got from my guide was to “hold on.” I’m usually good at following directions, so I gripped tight, with my hands held high and uncomfortably so.

As the ride went on, I kept a tight grip. The wind was strong that day, and every now and then it would shift suddenly, causing me to dip toward the ocean below. While soaring high, I often glanced down at the distant water and wondered if I could survive a fall. Given how forcefully I was told to “hold on,” I knew letting go would mean plunging into the sea.

After a talk with God about this situation, I remember feeling a quiet calm as I realized I might need to let go and surrender to whatever came next. As my arms grew weaker, I accepted that I had no choice but to release my grip. Even in that moment of uncertainty, there was a sense of peace, knowing I was supported through it all.

Eventually, I took a deep breath and slowly released the rope. As I waited, I realized the harness was secure and would keep me safe. With that understanding, I was able to relax and truly enjoy the remainder of my flight. It was a good thing I chose the longer ride, because I spent the beginning of the ride holding on for dear life. Those final moments after I had let go turned out to be the most enjoyable part of the adventure.

The most important part of the story is that despite my fear, I placed my trust in God and found peace in this very scary moment.
