Travel-The Fine Art of Dining Alone: Your Guide to Enjoying Meals Alone

Posted on May 8, 2025May 8, 2025

For many newly single people, eating out alone can feel a bit intimidating or uncomfortable. Over the years since my divorce, I’ve often taken myself out to restaurants and learned to enjoy the experience. Let’s explore some helpful tips to make dining solo a confident, enjoyable adventure.

Dining alone is a meaningful act of self-care. It’s a chance to treat ourselves by dressing up and enjoying a meal at our favorite restaurant—without any of the work of cooking. In those moments, we relax, unwind, and feel a little pampered, savoring the special attention just for us.

Many people feel nervous about dining solo, worrying they might be judged or pitied for being alone. These fears often come from our own assumptions rather than reality.

Did you know that 57% of people dining out are solo diners? Most folks aren’t judging those of us who eat alone. And if someone does, that’s their issue—not yours. My advice? Ignore the noise and focus on taking care of yourself.

Solo Dining Tips

  • Dress comfortably and appropriately for the restaurant.
  • If you’re feeling social, consider requesting a seat at the bar.
  • Bringing your laptop is possible, but use caution. It’s great for coffee shops or wine bars when working, but less appropriate during a full meal at a restaurant, as it can distract you and others.
  • Bringing your phone is fine for browsing articles or social media, and snapping photos (without flash) of your food or surroundings, but avoid talking on the phone during your meal out of respect for other diners.
  • A book or magazine is always a welcome companion; reading during a meal can be quite enjoyable in any setting.
  • Research the restaurant before you go: check reviews, parking options, and menus to know what you might want to order, especially if it’s a new place.
If you haven’t tried dining alone yet, I encourage you to give it a go. Recently, feeling a bit down, I decided to practice some self-care by treating myself to a solo night out. I enjoyed a tasty meal and a glass of wine at a local restaurant, then strolled over to a nearby wine lounge for a second glass. It turned into a truly lovely evening.

When you head out to dine solo, make it a full experience just for yourself. You’re only accountable to you, so try something new and be sure to treat yourself to dessert. Don’t stay home—there’s a whole world of delicious dining waiting for you to enjoy on your own terms!
Get out and have some fun.
