Eight Steps to Help You Face Your Fear When You Are Not Feeling Brave

Posted on April 20, 2026April 20, 2026

Life throws many things our way that can spark fear. Fear has a way of catching us off guard, plunging us into a state of dread and uncertainty, often leaving us unprepared to face the challenge ahead. It can be truly paralyzing, leading us to deny reality and hide instead of moving forward. But hiding only prolongs the difficulty and doesn’t help us overcome it.

I recently came across a quote by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant that really resonated with me during my divorce: “Bravery is not about the absence of fear. Bravery is taking action in the face of fear.” Inspired by this, I’ve gathered eight ideas to help us take action despite fear. Let’s dive in…

Eight Steps To Help Us Face Our Fears

Eight Steps To Help Us Face Our Fears

  1. Recognize your fear and allow yourself to feel it without judgment.
  2. Identify the root causes of your fear. Break it down into specific concerns rather than vague anxiety so you can address it effectively. Without understanding what’s causing your fear, it’s difficult to manage it.
  3. Concentrate on what you can control, and actively manage those aspects. Accept that some things, like my husband’s decision to leave, are beyond your control. Once I accepted that, I focused my energy on hiring an attorney, praying, and seeking support from friends and professionals.
  4. Seek out a mentor or counselor who can offer guidance and support—a role model who has faced, or is facing, similar challenges. They can help you find solutions and boost your confidence.
  5. Remember you’re not alone—others have experienced similar struggles. Your situation, while difficult, is not unique.
  6. Adopt a mantra or phrase that empowers you. For me, there were two mantras that helped me persevere through the early, tough stages of divorce.

“When you are going through Hell, keep going.”

Winston Churchill

“I will never leave you are forsake you!”

God

7.Create a plan to confront your fear directly. Set achievable goals to overcome it, knowing that avoiding fear doesn’t make it go away. Stand tall, take a deep breath, hold onto God’s hand, and face your fear with courage.

8.Never give up! You might face setbacks along the way, but persistence is key to moving forward.

God Bless You On Your Journey!
