Need Stress Relief? Give Exercise A Try!

Posted on October 8, 2025
Divorce is one of life’s most stressful experiences, ranking very high on the stress scale. With so many reasons for stress, it’s vital to prioritize self-care and find ways to reduce the pressure as much as possible. Exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress—it helps clear the mind, boost our mood, and improve overall well-being. Let’s take a closer look at how exercise can support stress relief and why moving your body matters during challenging times.

When my husband first left, I sank into despair and depression. I’m not sure how I managed it, but I kept exercising. Some days, I’d jog with my dog even when all I wanted was to curl up and hide from the world. After work, I’d push myself to attend Gabby’s Zumba classes, even when tears were just beneath the surface. Gabby may never know how much those classes helped me. Despite the mental fog, I kept moving, perhaps because deep down I instinctively knew that physical activity was a lifeline during that painful time.
Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It helps your body release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Physical activity also lowers the stress hormone cortisol, helping to calm your mind and reduce anxiety. Plus, exercise can improve your sleep, increase your energy, and give you a healthy outlet to release built-up tension. Making time for movement can play a big role in managing stress and boosting your overall well-being.
Here is a quote from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America…

“The physical benefits of exercise—improving physical condition and fighting disease—have long been established, and physicians always encourage staying physically active. Exercise is also considered vital for maintaining mental fitness, and it can reduce stress. Studies show that it is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function. This can be especially helpful when stress has depleted your energy or ability to concentrate.” Anxiety and Depression Association of America

Starting an exercise routine when you’re feeling stressed might seem daunting, but it’s one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Recognizing your own physical limits is important—always check with your doctor before beginning any new workout to ensure you’re choosing activities that are safe and suitable for your body. Exercise doesn’t have to mean high-intensity workouts; it can be as simple as doing housework, going for a hike, or even kicking back with some beginner-friendly videos on YouTube. There truly is something for everyone.

Whether you prefer a local health club, scenic trails, or the convenience of working out at home, there are countless ways to get moving. Regular activity is not just good for your body, but it’s also a proven way to calm your mind, reduce stress, and boost your mood. Don’t put it off until tomorrow—start caring for yourself today because you absolutely deserve it.

God Bless You On This Journey!
