Travel North Carolina: Discover the Peaceful Charm of Harkers Island Beach

Posted on September 10, 2025September 9, 2025

Nestled along North Carolina’s coast, Harkers Island is a charming Down East fishing village steeped in rich maritime history and renowned for its unique decoy carving tradition. I have been visiting Harkers Island for several years now and enjoy its unique charm. If you ever find yourself there, one of my favorite places to unwind is Harkers Island Beach—let me tell you what makes it so special.

Harkers Island Beach

As you enter Harkers Island via the newly constructed bridge completed in 2023, you cross over the tidal waterway known as the Straits. Watching this new bridge being built was a fascinating experience, as it replaced the original bridge that had faithfully connected the town of Straits and Harkers Island for over 50 years. This blend of history and progress perfectly reflects the spirit of the island.

Harkers Island has much to offer—from a couple of restaurants and fishing spots to lovely views of the water, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and the fascinating maritime museum. Plus, the ferry at the far end of the island can whisk you away on exciting adventures. While all of these are wonderful, one of my absolute favorite ways to spend time there is visiting and relaxing at Harkers Island Beach.

I get genuinely excited when it’s time to head to the beach. Rocky and I pack up our beach chairs, slather on sunscreen, grab our towels, snacks, and drinks, and set off for a day of relaxation. I’ve always had a love for the water—there’s something about being near it that fills me with happiness. Harkers Island Beach is a small, sandy haven with calm, peaceful water that feels amazing on your skin. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing and unwinding—a secluded retreat for anyone craving quiet and serenity away from busy crowds.

Rocky has shown me that there’s more to the beach than just the water. He’s caught hermit crabs, shrimp, and fish during our visits. Fun fact—I didn’t know shrimp have a spike that can hurt you until Rocky warned me against holding one! I’ve always been cautious around hermit crabs since they can pinch. Sometimes, Rocky brings his cast net to see what he can catch while I swim. But most of all, we just enjoy the water, savoring the beautiful sky and the beauty of the boats on the water, all while relaxing together on the beach.

If you find yourself in Harkers Island and are seeking a peaceful beach getaway, I highly recommend visiting Harkers Island Beach. This simple, natural spot offers tranquility with minimal amenities, so it’s best to bring your own supplies. Popular activities here include fishing, splashing in the shallow waters, paddling, and kayaking. Whenever I go, I always come prepared with food and drinks, chairs, water shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, beach towels—and, of course, a smile.

Happy Travels and Adventures Everyone!
