Stress Relief and Self Care-Need Stress Relief? Try Spending Some Time in The Sun!

Posted on June 23, 2025June 23, 2025

Stress can take a significant toll on physical, emotional, and mental health. Divorce, in particular, is one of life’s most challenging and stressful experiences. If you’re navigating this difficult time, finding effective ways to reduce stress is crucial. Here is one way to relieve stress…

Need Stress Relief? Try Spending Time in The Sun!

I recently read that spending some time sitting in the sun can actually help reduce stress. Now, I know what you might be thinking—what about sunburn, skin damage, or overheating? And yes, those concerns are real, especially with the risk of skin cancer. But like many things, when done in moderation, soaking up a little sunlight can be quite beneficial.

According to the Pain Relief Center, spending time in the sun can promote healthier skin, trigger your brain to release mood-boosting chemicals, and help reduce stress.

One great benefit of sunlight is that it boosts the production of serotonin, often called the “mood elevator.” You’ve probably heard the phrase “sunny disposition,” and maybe spending a little time in the sun is one way to actually cultivate that bright, cheerful outlook.

Spending time in the sun also helps your body produce vitamin D, which reduces inflammation and strengthens your bones—both key factors in lowering stress over time. Another bonus? Sunlight encourages your body to release nitric oxide, which can help lower blood pressure and promote overall heart health.

I looked into how long it’s safe to spend in the sun, and according to WebMD, anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes—and sometimes up to 30—can be okay. It really depends on factors like your skin tone, age, health history, diet, the season, and where you live. It’s a good idea to check with your doctor to find out what’s best for you. Above all, be cautious about the time of day and how long you’re outside. And don’t forget to protect your skin with sunscreen and your eyes with good sunglasses.

A Few Ideas to Soak Up Some Sun:

  • Take a hike
  • Enjoy a leisurely walk
  • Spend time at the beach or pool
  • Do some gardening
  • Go for a bike ride
  • If you can’t get outside, sit by a sunny window

So go ahead, embrace those sunny moments—just a little time in the sun can boost your mood, strengthen your body, and ease your stress. Remember to enjoy it wisely, protect your skin, and wear your favorite shades. Sunshine isn’t just good for your health; it’s a natural way to bring a little more joy and light into your day.

Take care, everyone! Here’s to a day with a little more calm and a lot less stress.
